Editorial Review:

Product Description:
The WD-52631 1080p DLP HDTV produces exceptionally sharp and clear high resolution pictures. At its heart is an exclusive 1080p light engine, the first to offer Mitsubishi's 6-Primary Color System. This proprietary Mitsubishi digital light engine provides the perfect picture, whether watching broadcast, cable or satellite TV, as well as DVD or video games. It is powered by TurboLight150, Mitsubishi's patented lamp system design, which focuses light more efficiently to generate a 10% brighter on-screen image than that produced by a standard 150 watt lamp system.

Amazon.com Product Description:
You'll enjoy a breathtaking viewing experience from any video source with the amazingly large and bright 52-inch Mitsubishi WD-52631 1080p digital light projection (DLP) television. Because 1080p provides twice the resolution of the high definition 720p or 1080i displays found in most HDTVs today, you'll get more vivid pictures--no matter the scene or content. Featuring a simple, clean design with a compact cabinet (at under 19 inches deep), the WD-52631 will fit into virtually any home theater furnishings without crowding the surroundings. It includes dual HD tuners, a QAM tuner that's fully compatible with unscrambled HDTV cable reception, and a wide variety of digital inputs (including two HDMI, three component, and a Firewire port). It also incorporates TV Guide's On Screen program guide for easy viewing of what's on today and seven days into the future.

It delivers stunningly bright and detailed images thanks to MitsubishiÕs proprietary 1080p DLP chip and the high-speed Plush1080p video processor (with a 6-segment, 10,800 RPM color wheel), which up-converts 1080i signals to 1080p producing four times the resolution of traditional line doublers (see more about Mitsubishi's exclusive set of video-enhancing technologies below).

The WD-52631 improves on the previous model (WD-52627) with a new and improved light engine featuring a 132-watt lamp (producing 20 percent more light). Large aperture optics improve the efficiency of the Mitsubishi LCD light engine by assuring that more of the available light reaches the screen for a smoother and brighter picture. This new television design also allows for a wider vertical viewing angle so that a bright and detailed picture can be viewed from a multi-level loft or while playing a video game when seated on the floor.

Also, Mitsubishi's 4D Video Noise Reduction system provides a cleaner, clearer picture from nearly any source by analyzing multiple frames to identify and remove video noise or snow caused by distortions in the video signal. This effectively keeps detail in the foreground and eliminates background noise, even in fast moving scenes.

The WD-52631 has a 1920 x 1080-pixel resolution, 16:9 aspect ratio, and compatibility with 480i/480p/720p/1080i video sources. It pumps out audio via its integrated 20-watt speaker system (10 watts per two channels) and also offers Mitsubishi's Level Sound Dynamics Limiter features, which evens out the sound of programs--even during loud commercial breaks. It also includes a multi-format memory card reader, enabling you to display still photo slideshows and play digital music files (MP3 and WMA).

Other convenience features include color temperature controls, full-screen image freeze, two tuner picture-in-picture (PIP), split screen, six 4:3 aspect ratio and two 16:9 aspect ratio picture formats, channel labeling, V-Chip parental controls, and a sleep timer. This set features the following video and audio connections:
  • Composite AV (RCA): 3 in (1 front), 1 out
  • S-Video: 3 in (1 front)
  • Component Video: 3 in
  • HDMI: 2 in
  • RF: 2 in
  • DVI audio: 2 in
  • Analog audio output: 1
  • Digital audio output: 1 (Coaxial)
  • Firewire: 1

The IEEE 1394 (also known as Firewire or i.Link) multimedia connection provides simple, high-bandwidth, real-time audio, video and data networking between this Mitsubishi TV and digital video camcorders and compatible PC systems, enabling you to record SD or HD digital video with plug-and-play ease.

Proprietary Mitsubishi Features
This television includes several exclusive Mitsubishi technologies that enhance its picture as well as ease of use.
  • Most important is Mitsubishi's Plush 1080p collection of imaging technologies, which up-convert lower quality images from every video source--analog and digital broadcasts, DVD players, digital cable and satellite, game consoles--to HD quality. And for a 1080p HDTV like this model, even the high quality 720p and 1080i HDTV signals being broadcast need to be reformatted. The Plush 1080p feature set scales the picture precisely, with minimal side effects. And 1080i, currently the most common form of HDTV signal, is spectacular at 1080p.
  • The Dark Detailer feature improves contrast ratio by more than four times, giving you a wide array of colors and shades that are essential for optimal viewing of dark, dramatic scenes while also providing maximum brightness.
  • Rather than provide standard color and tint controls, Mitsubishi's PerfectColor technology enables you to adjust the screen's color palette with six independent color controls (magenta, red, yellow, green, cyan, and blue).
  • Finally, the ClearThought set of features includes all-digital audio output (which converts analog audio signals to digital audio) and the NetCommand single-remote control home theater operation system (which allows you to set up and control components using simple on-screen icons). It also provides the TV Guide On Screen 8-day program guide system, which makes it easy to sort through all the television listings to find your favorite channels.

Tech Talk
A microdisplay television (also called DLP) typically offers a large screen with a cabinet that's deeper than standard LCD and plasma screens, but far more compact than old-school cathode-ray television (CRTs). This rear-projection TV projects red, green, and blue light that's filtered through a pixel-filled microchip color wheel and directed onto a digital micromirror device (DMD), a chip with millions of hinged, microscopic mirrors attached, which switches on and off up to 5,000 times a second. The reflected light is directed through a lens and onto a screen, creating an image. Unlike rear-projection CRT sets, all microdisplays can get quite bright without losing detail, so they're perfectly watchable in brightly lit rooms.

HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Don't buy this TV !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I purchased my Mitsubishi WD-52631 52" 1080 DLP HDTV in December 2007, less than one year later the bulb went. Even though they tried to get out of replacing it, they reluctantly sent a new one. That one lasted about 13 months and mitsubishi says that it is now my problem. A repair shop inspected the TV and found nothing wrong but the bulb. I expected at least 5-10 years with out a problem after spending about 2 grand for a TV. But according to Mitsubishi it normal to spend $250 on a bulb every ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Great Picture - plagued with problems
Purchased our DLP WD-52631 set in Feb 06. Within 6 months set was giving warning that lamp was overheating and would shut down. After several attempts from foreign support, tech came and worked on thermistor. About 1 month past warranty, bulb failed. Replaced and put an additional fan on the side of the set running continously. Set still goes off after a few months, three to five times a day. Search the internet for continuous string of testimonies concerning overheating problems in rooms that ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - It's just okay
We've had our big screen 20 months and already the tv won't turn on. Called the warranty number and the tech said it sounds like the lamp has burned out. ALREADY!!!! He also proceded to tell me that about every 2 yrs. we can expect to replace it. I couldn't believe my ears. Why would anyone in their right mind purchase a tv knowing that at $200 per lamp you'd be doing this regularly? I wish hubby would have done his homework before surprising me with this set. His tv of 10 yrs is still running ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Don't buy this TV
I bought this TV back in Dec 2007 have already had it in the shop to replace the power ballast (under warranty - after 10 months), replaced the lamp at 13 months, and now have to get it back into the shop to replace what is probably the main board. This is a huge disappointment in Mitsubishi, paricularly since seeing so many other posts on quality items with this same set. Do youself a favor and buy an LCD, preferably NOT Mitsibushi.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - DO NOT BUY THIS TV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My husband and I bought this tv 1 year ago. When we got it home, it was beautiful. That feeling didnt last long. We are now on our 3rd bulb with a total of 4100 hours on the tv set. Each bulb is said to last 3000-6000 hours. Communication with the company is the worst of any company we have ever dealt with, nothing but staying on hold for hours (our record for being on hold with them is 2 1/2 hours before speaking to anyone) only to get promises that will not be fulfilled. It seems that part of ... Read More
