Certification Summary: For individuals who work with Linux, and Red Hat Linux in particular. This is a system administrator level certification. Successful candidates will have significant Linux experience to draw upon.
Initial requirements: To earn the RHCE certification you must pass a hands on lab exam ($799). The closed-book exam consists of two elements: Section I: Troubleshooting and System Maintenance (2.5 hours) and Section II: Installation and Configuration (3 hours).
The lab exam is intended to verify that you can install and configure Red Hat Linux; understand limitations of hardware; configure basic networking and file systems; configure the X Windowing System; configure basic security, set up common network (IP) services, carry out basic diagnostics and troubleshooting, and perform essential Red Hat Linux system administration.
Continuing requirements:
RHCE certification is considered current until after one major released of the Enterprise product i.e. if you have RHCE on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 that it will be valid until the release of Red Hat Enterprise 5. To re-certify for a new release an individual needs to pass the RHCE Certification Lab Exam for the new release. Most individuals who use newer versions of Red Hat professionally will find their skills remain up-to-date.

Online resources: Red Hat offers eLearning versions of its "skills" curriculum to help
prepare for the RHCE exam; only a web browser and internet connection
are required. Red Hat offers a free online RHCE Exam Preparation Guide
at http://www.redhat.com/training/rhce/examprep.html. A complete
Student Guide, FAQ, News and Reviews, and class and exam schedule are
also available on the Red Hat site.
Offline resources: A corresponding recommended, but not required course is available
through Red Hat. The class, RH300 (RHCE "Rapid Track" Course) runs
5 days and costs $2498, including the lab exam on the last day.
This class is recommended for UNIX/Linux-experienced students. A
series of Red Hat Linux skills classes is also available for
students with less experience.
