LONDON (8 January 2020) — Director of Policy at BCS, Dr Bill Mitchell has been awarded an OBE in the New Year's Honours for services to Computing and Artificial Intelligence Education.
Bill said: "While I'm thrilled and honoured to be awarded an OBE, I know these things are as much to do with who you've worked with and their contribution as they are about your own contribution.
"I'm incredibly grateful to all the folks who have collaborated with BCS, which has meant after a decade of our combined hard work we've been able to make the world just that little bit better."
Bill has been responsible for shaping the BCS policy agenda, working with government departments, academia, industry and BCS members. Bill and his team have affected policy change in areas such as digital literacy, artificial intelligence, ethics and diversity.
He has over 20 of years experience in academia and industry. He has worked at the Universities of Manchester, Surrey and Southampton, as well as being a Research Engineer at Motorola's European Research Labs. He gained his PhD in Pure Mathematics over thirty years ago, but over the years his interests have moved into what he refers to as the mathematical foundations of pragmatic computing.
His research has been published in a variety of internationally peer-reviewed journals and conferences ranging from the IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering (TSE) to the Journal of Symbolic Logic (JSL).
Paul Fletcher, CEO, BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT added: "To receive this recognition is a huge achievement and we are extremely pleased for Bill. He has made an outstanding contribution to Computing and AI Education and is a deserving recipient of this award."
