DENVER (Feb. 23, 2023) — Girls in middle school in the Denver area will learn to design their own mobile apps and explore the possibilities of technology careers during a free, interactive workshop powered by TechGirlz, a program of CompTIA Spark, the nonprofit and social impact arm of CompTIA.
Designing Mobile Apps will be held Saturday, March 4, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Denver Public Library, Ross-Barnum Branch, 3570 W. 1st Ave., Denver.[1]
The workshop, led by tech industry professionals, is open to girls in 5th – 8th grades. Registration is required and girls are encouraged to bring a smartphone or tablet with a working camera to the workshop. Students will work in teams to design a mobile app. They will select an app idea, develop a prototype, and present their final product to the class. A snack will be provided during the event.
“As a woman in tech, I am excited to facilitate a hands-on and fun learning opportunity that demystifies technology and helps spark interest in tech careers for the next generation of women,” said Cathy Badell, lead solution engineer at Slack and host of the upcoming TechGirlz workshop.
At previous workshops, girls have created apps to map the safest route to walk home; identify a song by humming into a phone; help sight-impaired people navigate a shopping mall; and designed a game that teaches which fish are predators of others.
“It’s amazing to watch the girls’ faces light up when they show their prototype apps to their parents and friends,” said Danica Pascavage, manager, outreach, for the CompTIA Spark TechGirlz program. “They realize that technology is something they can use to create innovations that make others’ lives better.”
CompTIA Spark’s TechGirlz program helps inspire middle school girls to explore how technology can impact and empower their future careers. Girls can explore a variety of topics to spark their interest and passion for the world of technology in a fun and supportive all-girls learning environment.
